Reading Comprehension Lessons

Hi, my name is Amy Mackenzie. As a former classroom teacher and reading interventionist I often found it difficult to “fit it all in.” Phonics, Word Study, Vocabulary Development, Reading Comprehension Work, Writing About Reading, Differentiated Instruction – ugh – Who has the time? I also found that the books in the leveled library didn't engage my students. They were boring and had highly predictable story lines. As a result, I began to use the award winning quality literature from my school and classroom libraries to teach reading. Soon, my students were asking for more books and looked forward to reading. I also began to integrate the key components of reading instruction into my reading lessons both for whole group and small group delivery. My students’ reading levels improved, test scores improved and a classroom community of readers was born. I know how busy teachers’ lives can be. Finding the time to create new resources can be a daunting task in and of itself. That’s why I created Reading Comprehension Lessons. The lesson plans and resources that I began to create for my classroom were of no use filed away on my laptop. So today I am thrilled to share my lesson plans and resources with teachers who want to use the chapter and picture books they know and love to teach reading. I hope that my lesson plans and resources will make teaching reading a little bit easier and help your students to discover and enjoy reading.
